Where I Came From
The Day The Shortcuts Died
The town kept going. None of us were the same.
Every town has a before and an after. In mine, the after started the summer a boy my age took a bike ride through the woods and didn't make it home. The next morning the papers still had to be delivered, so we delivered them, but every shadow was a little deeper and the trails everybody used didn't feel safe anymore. I still think about him when I hear a bike chain turn at night. I still wonder why it wasn't me.
